Surfing Tips for Beginners: From Pop-ups to Paddling

Surfing tips for beginners

Have you always dreamed of surfing the beautiful waves in France, surrounded by clear water? That dream can come true at Brunotti Surfcamps. But what if you can’t surf at all? Here are some essential surfing tips for beginners who want to learn how to surf.

Take lessons

Of course you can get a surfboard and try to teach yourself to surf. However, that won’t be super effective. With instructions from professional surf coaches who know everything about surfing, this will go a lot smoother. In addition, bad habits will be picked up immediately and you will receive personalized surfing tips. A good start is half the battle!

Choose the right surfboard

A large surfboard is usually recommended for beginners. That makes it easier to get up. You have more space to find your balance. In our surfing lessons, we only use ‘soft top’ surfboards. These boards are specially designed for beginning surfers.

Practice the pop-up on land

The pop-up (or take-off) is the movement where you go from lying on your stomach to standing on your surfboard. By practicing this well on land, the chance of succeeding on the water is greater. Then you can focus on other things when you are on the water.

Stay low

Keep your back straight and bend your knees. If you stand lower, it is easier to keep your balance. This way you are more stable on your board.

Learn the right paddling technique

When surfing, you will have to paddle a lot. The trick is to paddle into the wave as hard as possible. This makes it easier to do your pop-up on the wave. Do not use many short and fast strokes, but long and strong strokes. Finally, try to keep your board as still as possible. If it wobbles a lot, this will cause delays.

Do not give up

Surfing is hard, difficult and progress can sometimes be slow. But keep going. You learn something new from every wave!

Go to a surf camp

Practice makes perfect. A surf camp is the best way to learn a lot in a short time. You practice a lot, are surrounded by people who know a lot about surfing and are happy to give you surfing tips.
