Surfing safety tips: Enjoy the waves safely!

surfing safety tips

There is nothing more fun than surfing. However, surfing can also be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. At Brunotti Surfcamps we always put safety first. This blog therefore offers a number of safety tips for surfers. Follow these tips for a safer surfing experience for you and your fellow surfers!

Know your limits

First, it’s important not to become overzealous. Be realistic about your surfing level. If you surf spots that are too difficult for you, you are not only endangering your own safety, but also that of other surfers. That is why it is important to always surf at surf spots that suit your skills.

Don’t surf alone

This is not only more pleasant, but also much safer. This way you can look out for each other, and if something goes wrong, the other person can always call for help.

Learn to fall

When you surf you will fall off your surfboard with some regularity. We also call this a wipeout. That is why it is useful to know how best to fall. Protect your head and fall away from your board. You don’t want to fall on your board. Do not jump, but fall backwards if possible. Make yourself as small as possible by curling into a ball. These are some things you can do to reduce the risk of injury.

Always hold your board

If the board shoots away, there is a chance that it could fly into another surfer. Of course you want to prevent this. If you do not have a leash, we strongly recommend it. This way your surfboard does not float away with the current.

Be aware of others

You obviously want to avoid colliding with other surfers. That’s why it’s important to be aware of your fellow surfers. There are also a number of surfing rules that are essential:

  • Never catch a wave that someone else is already riding.
  • Learn who has priority. This is the surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave.
  • When paddling back to catch another wave, always give way to the surfers. It is also important that you paddle widely around the wave, so that you do not collide with the surfer.

Take surfing lessons

These are some safety tips for surfers. The very best way to learn all the safety tips is to take surfing lessons. For example at surf camp at Brunotti!
