Surfing etiquette 101: Important rules for a good surfing experience

Surfing etiquette - Brunotti Surfcamps

Surfing etiquette helps create a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Both for you, and for your fellow surfers. Respecting these rules ensures good vibes and that everyone can enjoy the waves to the fullest. Don’t know the surf etiquette yet? No problem, we’ll explain it to you!

Patience and priority in the line-up

The line-up is the area in the water where surfers wait for their turn to catch a wave. This is where surfers wait for the right wave to arrive. As with any line-up, you must wait patiently for your turn. So don’t jump ahead or take someone else’s wave! How do you know when it’s your turn? There are some priority rules, namely:
The surfer closest to the peak has priority: The peak is the part of the wave that breaks first. The one closest to the peak has the right to take the wave or give it to someone else. This prevents several surfers from trying to grab the same wave at the same time.
The surfer already on the wave has priority: Generally, the rule is that only one surfer takes the wave. So don’t try to insert yourself when someone else is already taking the wave.
When paddling back around, always give surfers the right of way: In addition, it is important that you paddle wide around the wave so that you don’t collide with the surfer.

Respect the Locals

It is important to respect the local surfers. This is their home base, so they know the waves and the specific local rules better than anyone. Take some time to see how and where the locals surf. This will give you an idea of the best places to paddle and where it’s better to stay away. Local surfers often have their own unwritten rules and customs that you can only learn by observing. Of course, you can always ask about this right away!

Keep the beach clean

Surfing brings us closer to nature, and it is our responsibility as surfers to respect and protect this natural environment. Leave nothing but footprints behind. Take all your trash with you when you leave . If necessary, also clean up trash you encounter along the way. It takes little effort to pick up a piece of plastic and throw it away, but it keeps the beach clean.

The essentials of surfing etiquette

Remember that surfing is not only about the surfing itself, but also about the good vibes and sense of community. Surf etiquette is one way everyone can contribute to this. If you accidentally break surf etiquette, apologize. Everyone makes mistakes, and a “sorry” sometimes works wonders.
