Surfing equipment for beginners: Surfboards & Wetsuits
Before you can get into the water, you obviously need the right surfing equipment. In this blog we discuss two essential pieces of surfing equipment for beginners: wetsuits and surfboards.
Surfboards: Soft tops vs. hard tops
Soft tops are the perfect surfboards for beginners. As the name might suggest, soft tops have a soft foam top. At the beginning of your surfing career you will fall off your surfboard with some regularity. This makes the soft exterior ideal for beginners. In addition, this foam layer also makes the board even more stable with more buoyancy. For these reasons we use soft tops during our surfing lessons.
Hard tops are the most common surfboards. These boards are suitable for surfers with more experience. Hard tops are more agile, so it is easier to make turns on a hard top. Hard tops are also more durable and will last longer than a soft top. Finally, hard tops are a lot heavier and more expensive than soft tops. At Brunotti Surfcamps there are also a number of hard tops that you can rent if you have more experience.
Surfboards: Longboards vs. Shortboards
Surfboards come in all shapes and sizes. The longer the surfboard is, the more forgiving it is. It is easier to keep balance on a larger board. That is why longboards are much more suitable for beginners. Shortboards are more agile, but a small mistake means that you are immediately in the water. Shortboards are really intended for advanced surfers.
Surf equipment for beginners: Wetsuits
Which wetsuit you should wear naturally depends on the temperature. The wetsuit you probably first have in mind is the full suit. However, you usually use this with cool or cold water. A shorty is often used for warm water. This is a summer wetsuit, often with short sleeves and short legs. At Brunotti you can rent a shorty on location during your stay.
